All abstracts that have been submitted have been accepted for inclusion in the conference. Also, anyone who requested an oral presentation has been given a presentation slot.
The 2013 annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Zoologists is being held at the University of Guelph. As at previous meetings there will be a number of plenary and contributed sessions, a poster session, as well as significant opportunities for socializing and networking. The theme of the 2013 CSZ Meeting is: “Zoology for a Better Planet”. There will be a number of events at the meeting that are focused around this theme. The first is the Keynote Symposium. In this symposium world leaders in Biodiversity, Conservation Biology, Wildlife Ecology and Environmental Physiology will present lectures that will discuss real life application to their work. The second event is a public education lecture that will be given by Dr. Sheila Patek (UMass Amherst) who is a world leader in “Bio-inspired Design”. The focus of this lecture will be on how phenomena found in nature can be applied to solve human challenges and the design of new products.
Travel awards. All students/PDF’s who submit an abstract will be eligible for a travel award. The amount of this award will be determined by distance traveled.
Accommodation Campus accommodation is in East Residence rooms can be booked here. The Delta*, Days Inn and Best Western hotels are within 5-10 min walking distance from the conference site. The Holiday Inn is about a 5 min drive away from campus. CSZ attendants benefit from a special rate at all hotels.
Meals A breakfast plan is available for those staying on campus. There are many options on campus for lunch as well as multiple restaurants within a 15 min drive of campus. Food will be provided at all evening receptions. Please note that there is no kitchen space in the East Residence.
Wifi and internet access Free Wi-Fi access is included in your campus registration. You will receive a username and password at registration time.
Schedule & abstracts The Schedule and Abstracts will be posted in pdf format on the program page. Hard copies of the Abstracts will not be available.
Information for oral presenters All oral presentations must be on a thumb drive/USB stick in ppt or pptx format. We will be using PC computers so please make sure your presentation is compatible. Talks must be loaded on the computers prior to the session in which you are speaking. If you have embedded video please make sure to bring the video files as well as your PowerPoint file as they are needed for your presentation to play correctly. We recommend you avoid using unusual fonts as they may not appear correctly.
Posters Maximum poster dimensions (H x L) are 91 cm (3 feet) x 122 cm (4 feet). Poster numbers will be indicated in the Program. We will have materials available for poster hanging.
Silent auction The student section will again be running the Silent Auction at the banquet, and all proceeds will go towards the student fund. Please bring any books, gift certificates, zoology related items, artwork, and one-of-a-kind items. Items can be dropped off at the registration desk.
How to be the best – strategies for success at every career stage. The CSZ is full of people with successful careers in the biological sciences. To tap into that knowledge base we will be holding round table discussions at the U of G campus pub (Wednesday May 15 17:00). to address a variety of career-based questions facing scientists today. Topics will range from tips on balancing work and family life to how to talk to the media about your research. Whether you are a young faculty member or an undergraduate student considering graduate work this is a chance to pick the brains of your peers and those who have been there before.
